Original Text (English Translation)

A king ordered his ministers, "Bring an elephant here and show it to a group of blind men." Each blind man touched the elephant with his hands. Afterwards, the king summoned them and asked, "What does the elephant look like?" The blind men each described the elephant based on what they had touched.

One person touched its tusk and said the elephant was shaped like a carrot root; another touched its ear and likened it to a fan or sieve; a third felt its leg and compared it to a pestle used for grinding; a fourth grasped its tail and declared that the elephant was like a rope; while the last one touched its back and said it was as broad as a bed or mat. The king then told his ministers, "Although all these people touched the same elephant, their descriptions differ vastly and none is entirely correct. This teaches us that without seeing something ourselves, we should not jump to conclusions about its shape or form."
